Because I am a Girl is Plans campaign to fight gender inequality, promote girls' rights and lift millions of girls out of poverty.
Across the world, girls face the double discrimination of their gender and age, leaving them suffering at the bottom of the social ladder.
Girls are denied access to health services and education, and also face extremely high levels of violence, abuse, and harassment.
As part of the campaign, Plan is producing one report each year until 2015, the target year for the Millennium Development Goals.

Dear President Obama,
Around the world, millions of girls face life-threatening disadvantages - including malnutrition, lack of education, violence, and sexual abuse - all because they were born girls. This cycle of discrimination against girls must end now.
I urge you to support three simple actions that would improve the lives of millions of girls in developing countries:
Require birth registration, which will protect girls from early marriage, child labor, and enable them to vote and get jobs;
Ensure that girls benefit as much as boys from aid money given to education in developing countries; and
Help create a procedure that would enable girls and boys to voice complaints against their governments.
You can help give girls the equal legal and education rights they deserve. Supporting and educating girls is not just the right thing to do: investing in girls promotes economic growth and reduces child mortality and malnutrition.
Please take immediate action to end discrimination against girls by declaring your support.
